Giant ruins on top of a steep heuve it was one of the most important centers of the Cathar sect in this area, during the 13th century. The castle was built at an altitude of 1207 m. on a rock called "Pog". The building construction is like that of a solar temple, where the solstice is observed on June 21. During the crusade against the Albigeois, this fortress is the symbol of resistance of the Comtes Méridionaux (Southern Counts) and their Cathar subjects. After a ten-month siege, it fell into the hands of the royal army in 1244. More than 200 Cathars were burned at the foot of the Pog.
Good walking shoes are not superfluous for the climb to the Montségur.
On top of a deep abyss opposite the castle of Montségur, the castle of Roquefixade, a refuge and pocket of resistance of the Cathars in the 13th century, was destroyed by order of Louis XIII in the 17th century. The remains of the citadel, all year round accessible via a hiking trail from the village, offer a wide panorama over the Pays d'Olmes, the Pyrenees, the Lauragais and les Corbières.
TIP! A great trip on foot over the hills. Enjoy a great view during the picnic.
